The 2 Most Important Things you Need to Become a Great Soccer Player

There are a lot of soccer players out there that have intention aplenty. They WANT to get better. They WANT to be stronger, faster, and more skilled. They WANT to play more confidently. They WANT to be better at heading the ball, scoring goals and taking opponents on 1v1. They WANT to make a higher level team. They WANT to become a great soccer player. You name it, some soccer player out there wants it and has the intention to get better at it.
But what happens next, after intention, is what separates the average soccer player from the player that is going to go ALL-THE-WAY.
Here's why intention plus action are the two most important things you need if you want to be great at soccer
I’ll explain. We all know a player (or perhaps we even ARE that player) that is always talking about what they WANT in soccer, but are never able to put in the work to get it done. So, lots of intention, but NO action. Simply put, this will never work.
On the flip side of things, if you are a player who takes a lot of action (always doing 1:1 training, soccer camps, going on runs, etc.) and just training to train, that can be detrimental as well. If you’re running around and exerting your energy and just doing stuff to do stuff, but don’t feel any purpose, you’re going to have trouble progressing as well. Because to become a great soccer player, you need to have direction, you need to feel driven. You need to know your WHY.

The key to become a great soccer player

The 2 most important things you need to become a great soccer player are INTENTION + ACTION. Both of them. Together. Not one without the other, but both. TOGETHER.
Two little words that, alone, don’t mean much, but together are the key to unlocking your greatness on the soccer field. Simply having intentions and goals isn’t enough. You can have all the intention in the world, but you will never become a great soccer player if you don’t act on that intention. Intention is the starting point and action is where the magic happens, where you start to become a great soccer player.

When you have intention + action, you become an invested player. You become a player who is internally motivated and takes responsibility for their development. Only when you have the 2 of these things together can you have progression and growth.
When both your intention and action are being driven and motivated from within, you are cultivating authentic passion and drive and there isn’t ANYTHING more powerful than that. True passion and drive is what will help you push yourself through the hard moments, through the difficult moments ahead. Through until you reach your goals.
Grow your confidence through preparedness.

Taking action with your mental skills training

In regards to training the mental side of your game, taking action can be really hard. We all know that the game of soccer is HUGELY mental, yet most soccer players have yet to really incorporate mental skills training into their routines. This is because many players don’t know HOW to do it.
There’s a lot of great mental fitness resources out there to start individually training – but sometimes players need more. Doing a deep dive into mental skills training in a 1:1 environment is a FANTASTIC way to learn, progress and grow in this area and start gaining an edge on your competition from day 1. There is literally no replacement for the value of working with a mental skills coach 1:1 when it comes to growing your confidence on the soccer field.
Expand Your Game’s Mindset Mastery Academy is a one-of-a-kind program that helps female soccer players transform their soccer mindset in as little as ten weeks. This 1:1 mentorship is perfect for players that are invested and serious about growing their confidence and learning how to perform under pressure, but aren’t sure how to take action and do it for themselves. For details and an outline of the programs’s curriculum, visit our MMA mental skills training information page.

To become a great soccer player: Take action

A LOT of soccer players have the intention to become a great soccer player. But what separates the good players from the great players, is choosing to act on that intention.

What does it mean to choose to act on an intention? Choosing to take action means choosing to DO SOMETHING instead of just talking about what you want to do. Choosing to take action is an act of self-integrity. Choosing to take action is standing up for yourself and having your own back.

Examples: Want to be a better finisher? Go out and train more. Watch videos on technique. Film yourself  and analyze what you see. Want to have more game endurance? Go running. Do sprints. Take a look at your nutrition and see if there is anything you can change. THIS STUFF is taking action.

ACTION + INTENTION is a choice. Let’s all do ourselves a favor this week and CHOOSE to stop just talking about what we want for ourselves, in our lives, on the soccer field, etc. – and do something about it. You have the power to do this for yourself. You have the power to become a great soccer player.

Hi everyone!

I'm Jenn, a USSF C-licensed youth soccer coach, mental skills coach & founder here at Expand Your Game. I created this site because it is the site I needed when I was a soccer player.

About me: I am a former newspaper photojournalist who loves downtempo electronic music, guacamole and books of every sort. And of course soccer! On days off you can find me researching tiny farms in Portugal , tossing a frisbee for my dog, or tending to my growing collection of indoor plants.
