the tuesday transition - issue 53

August 1, 2023: It’s August already, wow! I cannot believe that autumn is just around the corner and with that, fall league play, collegiate seasons and just so much soccer in general. Yay!!!!

Players and coaches – as much as we know how fun the start of the fall season is, we also know that this can be when all of the hard stuff that comes along with playing competitive soccer, starts to pop back up. AKA, the pressure players put on themselves, the expectations they feel, the fear of failure, the overthinking on the field, etc. All of the things that can hold us back year after year. Well this is your year to break the cycle.

I have a lot of stuff that I will share in the weeks to come to help you tackle your fall season, but right now I challenge you to start with a super small but powerful tool. A game-changing reframe that could make this the best fall season you’ve ever had if you choose to lean into it. And that is:

Accelerated growth does NOT come from only doing the things we already know we do well so that we can stay comfortable and perform flawlessly all the time. YOU DO NOT PROGRESS IN THAT SPACE.

Soccer players, the truth is that you will actually get better at a much faster rate if you practice in a space that is beyond the scope of what your current skillset is. A space where you make mistakes. THIS is where accelerated growth comes from, from challenging ourselves and pushing the envelope.

We get better faster when we face adversity and struggle a bit in our training. We get better faster when we practice on the very edge of our ability. We get better faster when we get brave enough to leave our comfort zone. We get better faster when things are HARD.

In regard to how we look at mistakes, players often think they are going backwards when they make a mistake. Well guess what? They’re not. They are actually going FORWARDS. There is no world that exists where you can improve your skill at something by doing it perfectly every time. You are actually going FORWARDS when you try something and make errors because you are getting ONE STEP CLOSER to mastering the skill every time you do it. Regardless of what it looks like or what the result is, you ARE progressing forward.

Players, this fall season, make it your goal to completely reframe how you think about mistakes & difficult training sessions and games. IF YOU DO THIS, YOUR GAME WILL 100% EXPLODE.

This reframe and new perspective is a fresh way to start the fall season – if you truly dive into trying to use this, you will find that its actually simple shifts like this that hold the power to unleash your best version of yourself.

Free coaches meetups – coaches of female soccer teams, if you would be interested in attending a free monthly group mental skills collaboration, where coaches gather remotely to have a discussion on how to bring mental skills into team environments and help their players with some of these more difficult concepts, please fill out this Google form. I am considering starting this up and trying to gauge how much interest there would be.
